World Gold Council Reports Potential $700 Billion Demand for Digital Gold

The World Gold Council has released a report indicating that the digital gold market could unlock up to $700 billion in latent investor demand. Currently, the market for digital gold, which includes tokenized and vaulted products, is valued between $45 billion and $55 billion, representing less than 1% of the $13 trillion physical gold investment market. The findings are based on a survey of over 12,000 retail investors worldwide and interviews with 20 industry experts, revealing that nearly 90% of respondents would consider investing in digital gold if certain conditions are met.

The report identifies four key barriers to growth: trust, access, utility, and cost. Trust emerged as the primary concern, with nearly 80% of surveyed investors stating they need to trust a provider before investing. Access is another significant barrier, as adoption rates are significantly higher in markets where digital gold is integrated into everyday platforms, such as WeChat in China and Paytm in India. In these regions, digital gold transactions have seen substantial engagement, with over 120 million customers in India participating.

The World Gold Council projects that the digital gold market could grow to between $160 billion and $170 billion by 2031, with a more optimistic scenario suggesting it could reach $270 billion to $280 billion if barriers to adoption are addressed swiftly. A significant portion of this potential demand is expected to come from new investors, with 65% of the latent demand originating from individuals who have not previously invested in gold. The report also highlights that 52% of current digital gold holders had never owned gold before their first digital purchase, indicating a pathway for new investment into the gold market.
