U.S. Department of Homeland Security Orders Removal of DeepSeek Products from Civil Agencies

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has mandated that civil agencies remove all products from the Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek from their IT systems. This directive, issued on Monday, also prohibits any new purchases of DeepSeek products or third-party services built on its technology. The DHS expressed concerns that the use of DeepSeek could potentially lead to the transfer of sensitive data to China and facilitate intelligence operations targeting U.S. individuals and institutions.

The memorandum, which was made public on Monday, follows a previous request from DHS in July for agencies to monitor risks associated with DeepSeek's technology. This latest ban not only affects DeepSeek's applications but also extends to third-party services utilizing its models. Prior to this directive, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Navy, and several states, including New York, Tennessee, and Virginia, had already imposed restrictions on DeepSeek.

DeepSeek, a startup based in Hangzhou, China, gained significant attention in January 2025 when its open-source model led to a notable decline in Nvidia's stock price. The U.S. House of Representatives' Special Committee on China Issues raised alarms in April 2025, suggesting that DeepSeek might be transmitting U.S. user data to the Chinese government. The company's V4-Pro model, released earlier this year, was priced significantly lower than competing products, further raising concerns about its impact on the market and national security.
