NVIDIA completes 104-qubit fault-tolerant quantum computing simulation, says required qubits can be reduced by 90%

PANews, October 20 — According to NVIDIA's official press release, NVIDIA used 8,192 GPUs on JUPITER, Europe's first exascale supercomputer at Germany's Jülich Supercomputing Centre, to complete a simulation of a 104-qubit fault-tolerant quantum processor, which NVIDIA says is the largest complete simulation of its kind to date. The simulation validated "magic state cultivation," one of the mainstream approaches to fault-tolerant quantum computing, which NVIDIA says reduces the required qubits by 90% compared with previous methods, and the related development work also shortened simulations that originally took weeks to just days. NVIDIA stated that such simulations are expected to shorten the timeline to practical quantum computers by several years.
