Zhao Changpeng Warns of Supply Chain Risks for Ledger Hardware Wallet Users
Zhao Changpeng, a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency industry, has issued a warning to users of Ledger hardware wallets regarding potential risks associated with counterfeit or tampered devices. This alert comes in light of a supply chain incident involving a distributor, which has raised concerns about the integrity of some recently purchased devices. Zhao emphasized the importance of vigilance among users, particularly those who acquired their wallets in the last 90 days.
Ledger, a well-known brand in the hardware wallet sector, is currently investigating reports of asset theft affecting users in Southeast Asia who purchased devices through the distributor CryptoBilis. In response, Ledger has requested CryptoBilis to halt all sales and shipments. Users who have obtained devices from this distributor are advised not to initialize them and, if already set up, to create a new signing device with a fresh mnemonic phrase to safeguard their assets.
On-chain investigator Specter has reported that this incident has resulted in the theft of hundreds of wallets across the Bitcoin, Ethereum, and TRON networks, with estimated losses exceeding 86 million dollars. Security researcher tanuki42 previously indicated that losses could be over 72 million dollars and noted that the situation is still evolving. The investigation continues to determine the exact cause of the incident and whether the affected devices possess any security vulnerabilities.
