Chicago Fed President Warns of Challenges in Restoring Price Stability

Austan Goolsbee, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, has indicated that achieving the central bank's inflation target of 2% will be a difficult task. He attributed this challenge to ongoing supply shocks, particularly from energy price fluctuations and tariffs, which are compounded by strong economic demand.

Goolsbee highlighted the necessity for policymakers to consider the long-term effects of these supply-side disruptions on inflation. He noted that while supply shocks differ from demand-driven inflation, the Federal Reserve remains committed to intervening if there are signs of overheating in the economy.

The Chicago Fed President emphasized that without clear evidence of a decline in supply-driven inflation, the path to restoring price stability will be complex and potentially painful for the economy.
