Oman’s space sector grows with private investment support

Private investment in Oman’s space sector almost quadrupled in 2025, three years after the launch of the national space policy, according to a government official.

Oman is seeking to build a commercial space industry as part of its economic diversification drive.

Private sector investment rose from OMR20 million ($52 million) in 2023 to OMR74 million in 2025, the state-run Oman News Agency reported.

About 65 percent of space projects — including space sovereignty, satellites and space launch — have entered implementation under the policy and its executive programme, said Said Hamoud Al Maawali, minister of transport, communications and information technology.

The number of companies operating in the space sector increased from 11 in 2023 to 25 in 2025, the ministry said. The number of employees in government and private institutions has also grown by 163 percent since 2023.

The national space policy focuses primarily on terrestrial space applications.

In November 2025, Oman signed an agreement with Airbus Defence and Space for the design, manufacturing and launch of the communications satellite OmanSat-1. Operations are scheduled to begin in 2029.

The ministry has also started drafting the Omani Space Law to ensure compliance with international obligations, boost investor confidence and create an enabling environment for sustainable growth.
