Blink Wallet Suspends Services Following Security Breach

Blink Wallet, a Bitcoin Lightning Network payments application, has halted all services as of September 19, 2026, after an attacker accessed and drained funds from a limited number of its custodial accounts. The company has implemented an emergency patch to address the vulnerability, although the full extent of the breach remains unclear. The unauthorized withdrawals specifically targeted custodial accounts, where Blink manages the private keys on behalf of users, while non-custodial wallets were not affected.

The company confirmed the incident via a post on X, stating that the attacker managed to withdraw funds from a subset of custodial accounts. However, Blink has not disclosed the total amount stolen or the exact number of accounts compromised. To reassure users, the company emphasized that the majority of funds remain secure, thanks to its multisig cold storage system designed to limit exposure in such scenarios.

This breach comes at a challenging time for Blink, as the company has been winding down custodial services in certain regions due to regulatory changes, with user migration deadlines set for August and September 2026. The introduction of non-custodial wallets through the Spark protocol earlier in 2026 has taken on new significance, as it encourages users to manage their own keys amid increasing regulatory pressure and security concerns.

As the investigation continues, custodial account holders are awaiting further information regarding the breach and potential compensation. The incident highlights the inherent risks associated with custodial services in the cryptocurrency space, where pooled user funds can create vulnerabilities that are attractive targets for attackers.
