Ethereum Institutional Supports Proposal to Reduce Block Times

Ethereum Institutional, a non-profit organization co-founded by former members of the Ethereum Foundation, has expressed its support for a proposal aimed at enhancing the network's efficiency. The proposal, known as EIP-8198, seeks to reduce Ethereum's block time from 12 seconds to 10 seconds as part of the upcoming Hegotá upgrade, scheduled for 2027. This initiative comes in response to increasing institutional demand for faster transaction settlements.

EIP-8198, dubbed "Quick Slots," focuses on the interval at which validators propose new blocks. The proposed change involves a one-time client refactor that would allow developers to adjust slot timing dynamically, rather than hardcoding it. While the reduction in block time does not directly alter the current finality, which typically takes around 15 minutes, it is expected to streamline the overall transaction process.

Matthew Dawson, a co-founder of Ethereum Institutional, highlighted the financial implications of faster block speeds, asserting that such improvements would enhance Ethereum's attractiveness to institutional investors. Feedback from approximately 20 ecosystem participants, including major protocols like Lido and Ondo, indicates broad support for the proposal, with no significant concerns raised regarding decentralization or validator participation.

The reduction in block time is anticipated to benefit market makers by narrowing the risk window during trades, leading to tighter spreads and improved execution for traders. Additionally, supporters of EIP-8198 believe that it could enhance censorship resistance when combined with other proposed mechanisms, paving the way for future adjustments to block times without necessitating extensive protocol upgrades.
