Investigation Launched into Kidnapping of Crypto Worker’s Family in Northern France

The Béthune prosecutor's office in northern France has initiated an investigation following a violent home invasion on September 20, where four masked assailants kidnapped a crypto IT specialist's family. The intruders bound the family members and coerced the father into transferring approximately €40,000 in digital assets during the nearly three-hour ordeal in Vendin-le-Vieil, a small commune in the region. The victims sustained minor injuries and are currently recovering from the traumatic incident.

This incident is part of a troubling trend in France, which has seen over 70 violent attacks related to cryptocurrency in the first eight months of 2026, accounting for nearly 80% of such incidents reported across Europe. The rise in these so-called 'wrench attacks' is attributed to leaked personal information from crypto platforms, which has made it easier for criminals to target individuals and their families. More than 40% of the attacks in early 2026 specifically involved threats to family members, highlighting a disturbing shift in tactics among criminals.

French authorities have responded to the surge in violence with specialized organized crime units, resulting in around 200 arrests and multiple indictments by mid-2026. The involvement of France's anti-cybercrime office in this case indicates a recognition that these incidents are more than mere home invasions; they are organized efforts to exploit vulnerabilities in the cryptocurrency ecosystem. As the investigation continues, authorities are hopeful that blockchain forensics may help trace the stolen funds before they are laundered through mixing services.
