Nine Crypto Firms Establish Quantum Alliance to Develop Standards for Quantum Resistance

Nine cryptocurrency organizations have formed the Quantum Alliance, a group aimed at establishing verifiable standards for what constitutes quantum resistance in blockchain technology. Launched on October 15-16, 2026, the alliance seeks to address the ambiguity surrounding the term 'quantum-resistant' by creating clear criteria that organizations must meet to make such claims.

The founding members include representatives from Quantus, American Fortress, and Intmax, among others. The alliance plans to focus on critical areas such as transaction signatures, key management, and blockchain migration to quantum-resistant alternatives. Initial working groups will tackle issues like wallet and key security, post-quantum zero-knowledge proof systems, and ensuring cross-chain compatibility to prevent fragmentation in the adoption of quantum security measures.

Current blockchain networks primarily rely on elliptic-curve signatures, which are vulnerable to potential quantum attacks using Shor's algorithm. The Quantum Alliance aims to fill the gap left by existing cryptographic standards, such as those finalized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in August 2024, which do not fully address the unique challenges posed by blockchain technology. By developing open standards, the alliance hopes to facilitate a smoother transition to quantum-resistant systems for developers and users alike.
