Fidelity Report Highlights Resilience and Risks in Solana Network

A recent report from Fidelity’s Center for Applied Technology (FCAT) reveals that Solana has maintained a significant uptime record, going over two years without a major mainnet outage. The report, titled "The State of Solana: Network Health and Resilience," indicates that Solana has achieved a vote success rate of approximately 99.7% in 2026, reflecting the network's ability to confirm blocks effectively. Additionally, the network has increased its capacity by reducing slot times, allowing it to handle a growing number of transactions as usage expands.

Despite these positive indicators, the report raises concerns about the concentration of stake, hosting, and client software within the Solana ecosystem. FCAT notes that around 18 validators control enough stake to potentially halt transaction finality, which requires one-third of the total stake. Furthermore, a single hosting provider accounts for nearly 29% of the total stake, surpassing the acceptable limits established by the Solana Foundation. Geographically, approximately 40% of the stake is concentrated in Frankfurt and Amsterdam, raising additional concerns about systemic risk under heavy transaction loads.

The report also highlights the dominance of specific client software, with about 63% of stake operating on Jito-Solana and 26% on Harmonic, both linked to the Agave codebase. This concentration in client software could pose risks if vulnerabilities in the underlying code were to be exploited. FCAT emphasizes that assessing network health should involve a comprehensive view of stake distribution, geographic diversity, and client variety, rather than merely counting the number of validators.
