Pendle Finance Achieves Significant Emission Reduction and Increased Liquidity
Pendle Finance has implemented a major transformation in its tokenomics, achieving a 92% reduction in token emissions and a 40% increase in liquidity depth. This shift is attributed to the introduction of the Algorithmic Incentive Model (AIM) in January 2026, which automated the incentive allocation process based on total value locked and swap fee data. Initially aiming for a 30% reduction, the protocol surpassed expectations, resulting in an annual inflation rate for the PENDLE token of just 0.2%.
The protocol has also initiated a robust buyback program, channeling up to 80% of its revenue into purchasing PENDLE tokens from the open market. By late September 2026, cumulative buybacks exceeded 2.68 million PENDLE tokens, valued at approximately $3.7 million. This aggressive buyback strategy is notable, as it operates at a rate ten times higher than the minting of new tokens, with an annualized buyback rate of around 2% of the total supply.
Additionally, Pendle introduced sPENDLE, a liquid staking token, in January 2026, replacing the previous vote-escrowed model. This new system has significantly increased participation, with over 100 million PENDLE tokens staked by early July 2026, nearly doubling the staking rate from the previous model. The enhanced liquidity depth allows for larger trades to be executed with reduced price impact, reflecting the success of the new incentive structure and increased staking participation.
