Robinhood Expands Prediction Markets Beyond Sports Amid Regulatory Scrutiny

Robinhood Markets, Inc. is shifting its focus in the prediction market sector, moving beyond sports-related contracts to include crypto-linked and economic event contracts. CEO Vlad Tenev indicated that while sports contracts have been a significant part of the business, they are expected to represent a minority of prediction market activity in the future. This diversification comes as Robinhood faces increasing regulatory scrutiny, particularly from states like Missouri, which has mandated that the company cease offering sports event contracts without a proper license.

The prediction market segment has become a crucial growth area for Robinhood, with revenues from event contracts surging over tenfold year over year to $156 million in the second quarter of 2026. The total number of contracts traded also reached a record 13.6 billion. This growth aligns with Robinhood's strategy to enhance customer engagement beyond traditional stock and options trading, providing users with more reasons to return to the platform.

As competition intensifies, with firms like Interactive Brokers and Coinbase expanding their own prediction market offerings, Robinhood is also strengthening its infrastructure. The company has begun routing event contracts to Rothera, a CFTC-licensed exchange, which accounted for $17 million of its event-contract revenues in the last quarter. This move is expected to provide Robinhood with greater flexibility to adapt to customer demand and expand its contract offerings.

Investors are closely watching whether non-sports contracts can gain traction while maintaining strong overall revenue growth in the prediction market. Sustained growth in this area could enhance Robinhood's earnings potential, adding a new revenue stream alongside its existing equities, options, and crypto trading operations. Despite the challenges posed by regulatory uncertainties and increasing competition, the continued expansion of prediction markets may solidify their role as a key driver of Robinhood's future growth.
