Robinhood to Introduce Tokenized Stock Trading in the US by 2027
Robinhood, a retail brokerage firm, is set to launch tokenized stock trading in the United States by 2027, following a recent decision by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that grants a conditional exemption for blockchain-based equities. This development comes after Robinhood successfully launched its Robinhood Chain mainnet on July 1, 2026, allowing users in over 120 countries to trade tokenized stocks, although U.S. users were initially excluded due to regulatory constraints.
The SEC's decision on September 17, 2026, introduces a five-year conditional exemption that permits qualified venues to facilitate trading of tokenized National Market System stocks on blockchain platforms. However, this exemption comes with specific requirements, including the preservation of shareholder rights and obtaining issuer consent, which may necessitate changes to Robinhood's current model of tokenized debt securities that do not confer direct ownership or voting rights to holders.
Robinhood's tokenized equity initiative began in June 2025 with the introduction of Classic Stock Tokens for users in the European Union and European Economic Area. By early September 2026, these tokens accounted for approximately 60% of the tokenized equity transfer volume, highlighting Robinhood's significant presence in this emerging market. The company's CEO, Vlad Tenev, has advocated for regulatory clarity, emphasizing the benefits of tokenized stocks, including real-time settlement and reduced reliance on traditional market infrastructure.
