Solana Reduces Block Times to Enhance Data Freshness
On September 18, 2026, the Solana blockchain network implemented a significant upgrade, reducing its target block time from 300 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds. This change, which coincided with the commencement of epoch 1037, allows for four slots to be produced per second, an increase from approximately 3.3 slots per second prior to the adjustment.
This upgrade is part of the phased proposal SIMD-0525, aimed at progressively tightening Solana's block cadence, with a long-term goal of achieving 200 milliseconds per slot. However, it is important to note that this increase in speed does not translate to a higher transaction throughput. To maintain network stability, Solana proportionally decreased the compute and data limits per slot, lowering the maximum compute units from 60 million to 37.5 million.
The practical advantage of this upgrade lies in improved data freshness, which is crucial for applications that rely on up-to-date information. With the new block time, the duration of each epoch has also decreased, now lasting approximately 30 hours instead of the previous 36 hours. This change impacts validators and the distribution of staking rewards, as well as any protocols that depend on epoch timing.
The SIMD-0525 proposal has been rolled out in stages, with previous reductions occurring on August 19 and August 25, 2026. The final target of 200 milliseconds has been tested on both development and testing networks, but its activation on the mainnet will depend on the block-skip rate, as tighter timing windows require validators to perform consistently within their assigned slots.
