U.S. Inflation Rises to 3.7% Amid Ongoing Energy Price Pressures
The U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) for September has risen to 3.7%, reflecting increased cost of living pressures on Americans as the midterm elections approach in November. This rise marks the first increase in inflation rates since May and is attributed to the ongoing impacts of the conflict in Iran, which has led to significant fluctuations in energy prices.
The core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, also saw an increase, rising from 2.4% in August to 2.6% year-on-year. Following the release of this data, U.S. Treasury yields surged, while international gold and silver prices fell. The U.S. dollar index strengthened as market expectations grew for three additional interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve before the end of 2027.
Gasoline and diesel prices have been particularly affected, experiencing a spike after the outbreak of the war, followed by a temporary retreat during the summer months. However, escalating tensions have caused fuel prices to rise again, with diesel reaching historic highs. U.S. President Donald Trump has been actively seeking measures to mitigate the impact of these rising energy costs on consumers. Polls indicate that voter dissatisfaction may influence the Republican Party's standing in the upcoming elections, which will determine control of Congress.
