While Félix Raised $200M to Move Beyond Remittances, Western Union Had Already Closed Its Stablecoin Gap

Félix, the Miami-based startup that lets Latin American immigrants send money home through WhatsApp using USDC for settlement, has raised $200 million in a round split between $87 million in Series C equity led by Andreessen Horowitz and a $113 million credit facility from General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund, structured specifically to underwrite the lending product the company plans to launch.
QED Investors, Castle Island Ventures, Switch Ventures, Contour Venture Partners and Endeavor Catalyst also joined the equity side. The round values Félix at $1.4 billion, nearly three times the $484.5 million valuation it carried after a $75 million Series B in 2024, and brings its total capital raised since founding to close to $300 million.
Founders Manuel Godoy and Bernardo García started the company in 2020 after Godoy, an immigrant himself, found that basic financial services in the US were harder to access than they should have been. "I experienced this problem personally," Godoy told Crunchbase News. "When I came to the U.S., even getting a small loan was harder than it should have been."
Félix's pitch has always been that stablecoins solve an operational problem rather than a speculative one: settling transfers on USDC lets the company skip the correspondent-banking chain that makes traditional remittances slow and expensive, while users never touch a crypto wallet directly. The company says it has processed more than $8 billion in remittances for over six million users across 11 Latin American markets, including Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras and Peru.
The market this is aimed at is large and structurally inefficient enough to make the pitch credible on its own terms. Latin America and the Caribbean received $173.7 billion in remittances in 2025, the sixteenth straight year of growth, with Mexico alone accounting for over $62 billion. Yet the average cost of sending $200 across borders sits at 6.36%, more than double the United Nations' 3% target, largely because the money still passes through multiple correspondent banks before it reaches a recipient. Bitso, a Mexican exchange that pioneered crypto rails for the same corridor, has shown the compression is real: it processed $6.5 billion in remittances in 2024, more than a tenth of all US-Mexico flows, at a cost under 1% including on- and off-ramp fees. Félix is competing directly in that same structural gap, at a larger multi-country scale.
A policy change this year sharpens the timing. A new US federal excise tax of 1% now applies to cash-funded international transfers, while digital transfers are exempt. That is a direct tailwind for an app-based, digital-rail platform like Félix and a direct cost increase for competitors that rely on cash-agent networks, which is most of the traditional remittance industry. It is the kind of regulatory detail that does not show up in a funding announcement but changes the competitive arithmetic more than the announcement itself.
The catch is that the weeks before this raise make it harder to read Félix's stablecoin settlement as a durable moat rather than an industry-wide baseline. On August 4, Western Union announced Stablecard, a Visa card backed by USDPT, a Solana-based stablecoin issued by Anchorage Digital Bank, launching live in 37 markets and targeting more than 60 by year-end. Western Union, the incumbent with the largest cash-agent network in the world, can now offer dollar-denominated stablecoin value through Stablecard while still operating the cash-agent network that the new excise tax penalizes, giving it a foot on both sides of the digital-versus-cash line at once. Settling in a stablecoin is no longer something only a crypto-native challenger can do. A month before Félix closed its round, the largest incumbent in the industry had already made it table stakes.
That is the context for why Félix is spending this round on lending and savings rather than just more remittance volume. General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund does not take an equity stake or function like a conventional loan against the balance sheet. It fronts capital tied to a specific business line and is repaid through a capped share of the value that line generates, which is why the firm is comfortable describing the $113 million as structured around Félix's lending business specifically rather than the company as a whole. It lets Félix test whether its six million WhatsApp users will actually take out loans and savings products, without committing the parent company's full balance sheet to the outcome if they do not, or if they default at rates a payments company hasn't had to model before.
That is also where the real risk in this expansion sits, and where a16z partner Ali Yahya's framing of Félix as "what the future of financial services can look like for millions of Latinos" gets tested against something less forgiving than remittance settlement. Moving money on someone else's behalf and lending them money are different regulatory lanes with different capital, underwriting and compliance requirements, and Félix has only had to build the first of those at scale.
An AI agent that handles financial interactions inside WhatsApp is an appealing interface, but the interface was never the hard part of lending. Underwriting a population that is often thin-file, sometimes undocumented, and remitting a meaningful share of every paycheck abroad is. Whether Félix's stablecoin infrastructure translates into a credit business investors will still like in two years is the part of this story that the fundraising announcement cannot answer.
