Gold and Bitcoin Prices Surge Following US Treasury Buyback Announcement

Gold prices increased by approximately 3% and Bitcoin surged from over $65,000 towards the $69,000-$70,000 range after the US Treasury announced an expansion of its buyback program for longer-dated government bonds. The Treasury doubled the planned size of some buyback operations from $2 billion to at least $4 billion, focusing on bonds with maturities of 10 years or longer. This move led to a decline in Treasury yields and a weakening of the US dollar, contributing to a rally in various financial assets.

The reaction in the markets suggests that traders may be increasingly concerned about the long-term purchasing power of the dollar. Analysts noted that the significant rise in gold's price indicates that investors interpreted the Treasury's decision as part of a broader narrative regarding fiscal policy and potential inflation, rather than merely a technical adjustment to the bond market.

Treasury buybacks involve the government repurchasing older bonds, which can improve market liquidity and temporarily raise bond prices. However, these buybacks do not necessarily reduce the overall government debt, as new securities may be issued to finance the operation. The market's response to the buyback announcement reflects a growing sensitivity among investors to the implications of rising government borrowing costs and potential future interventions by policymakers.
