About $10 Trillion by 2030: Morgan Stanley Reveals Plans for the Tokenized Asset Market

      • Morgan Stanley has postponed the launch of support for tokenized equities to Q1 2027.
      • A bank representative said the RWA market will reach $3-$10 trillion by 2030.
      • The bank is also testing blockchain technologies for future financial products.

Morgan Stanley expects to begin supporting tokenized equities on its own alternative trading system (ATS) in Q1 2027. The bank’s head of digital asset strategy, Amy Oldenburg, told The Block during the TOKEN2049 conference.

According to her, this timeline is more realistic than the previous forecast, which anticipated a launch in the second half of 2026. The bank’s team continues to build the infrastructure needed to work with such assets.

“We need a product in order to be able to support it within the ATS. And there really isn’t any client demand because the product itself doesn’t exist. So we just need a bit more time,” Oldenburg explained.

Morgan Stanley Prepares Infrastructure for Tokenization

Oldenburg called the upcoming launch of the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation’s (DTCC) tokenization service an important milestone for the market’s development. The bank is also monitoring the GENIUS Act taking effect in January and the regulatory landscape in the US.

According to her, certain regulatory issues remain unclear for institutional players, including those related to permissions from the US Federal Reserve and the CLARITY bill.

Support for tokenized equities on its own ATS aligns with Morgan Stanley’s strategy for raising, allocating, and managing capital onchain. Such a system makes it possible to match orders off public exchanges, including Nasdaq.

The bank already offers clients cash equities, derivatives, and swaps under a similar model. At Morgan Stanley, tokenization is seen as an extension of existing services that will enable work with assets in both traditional and onchain formats.

In addition, the company is developing its own wallet infrastructure for custodying tokenized assets and products. Morgan Stanley has also created a Digital Asset Lab — a lab for testing blockchain technologies and crypto infrastructure before potentially rolling them out into new products.

Oldenburg noted that the bank is exploring various areas that could interest clients, including perpetual futures and prediction markets. At the same time, she emphasized that this does not mean the bank will necessarily launch the corresponding products.

Among the most promising tokenization use cases, Oldenburg cited private equities, structured notes, bespoke financial products, and access to private funds. According to her, using blockchain in these areas could reduce paperwork and administrative costs.

As tokenization becomes more widespread, the question of using such assets as collateral will also arise. Oldenburg described this direction as “securitization of everything.”

The Morgan Stanley executive is confident that by 2030, the market for tokenized real-world assets will reach between $3 trillion and $10 trillion. She said that over the past 12 months, the industry has been actively announcing new projects, and fear of missing out has intensified among institutional players.

As a reminder, earlier, U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chair Michael Selig said that tokenization of real-world assets could become the foundation of a more efficient financial system.
