AI Boom Reshapes Korean Stock Market: Korean Capital Loads Up on Semiconductors, Foreign Investors Dump Samsung and SK Hynix

PANews reported on October 6, citing Korean media outlet DAUM, that data released by the Korea Exchange shows the AI boom is reshaping the Korean stock market. Between January 2 and October 2, 2026, capital flows in the Korean stock market diverged markedly, with Korean capital concentrating on buying core semiconductor stocks in the AI supply chain—Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix—while foreign investors sold off heavily.

It is reported that Korean retail investors have cumulatively net bought 43.1143 trillion won of Samsung Electronics and 39.5028 trillion won of SK Hynix this year. Institutional investors likewise bet on semiconductors, net buying 11.6193 trillion won of Samsung Electronics and 8.5265 trillion won of SK Hynix. By contrast, foreign investors cumulatively net sold 84.5702 trillion won of Samsung Electronics and 82.5040 trillion won of SK Hynix, while also reducing holdings in Hyundai Motor, SK Square and other stocks.

Analysts believe that, against the backdrop of U.S. Treasury yields rising into the 5% range, the market is paying more attention to sectors with earnings capability, and semiconductors and IT hardware driven by AI infrastructure investment should remain core allocation targets.
