AI Job Creation in the U.S. Surpasses Job Losses, According to The Economist
The Economist estimates that artificial intelligence (AI) has generated approximately 1 million new jobs in the United States, significantly outpacing the roughly 200,000 jobs lost due to AI since mid-2023. This assessment is based on employment data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on September 4, which indicated that the U.S. economy added 162,000 jobs in August, maintaining an unemployment rate of 4.1%. Notably, the unemployment rate for young individuals aged 20-24 is nearing its lowest level in decades.
Job growth is primarily driven by high-skilled positions that directly support AI development, as well as blue-collar roles linked to the construction of data centers. Since 2022, around 730,000 jobs have been added beyond the expected trend for engineers, software developers, mathematicians, and data scientists. The chief economist at the Burning Glass Institute reports that about 1% of professional jobs in the U.S. are now classified as AI jobs, with this figure rising to 4% to 5% in computer and life sciences fields.
The surge in data center construction, which has seen a 60% increase in spending over the past year, has led to heightened demand for electricians, HVAC technicians, and other related roles. Data from Indeed indicates that salaries for jobs in data center installation and maintenance are approximately 40% higher than those for similar positions. However, the landscape is not without challenges; customer service roles have declined by about 10% since January 2023, and administrative assistant positions have decreased by around 15%. Major companies like Microsoft and Meta have also announced staff reductions as they restructure their operations to focus on AI, with an average of 16,000 layoffs related to AI occurring each month.
