Cathie Wood Highlights Strong August Employment as Indicator of Technology-Driven Deflation

Cathie Wood, founder of ARK Invest, commented on the recent employment report, which showed a significant increase in non-farm employment by 162,000 in August. Additionally, household survey employment growth surpassed 500,000, and there was an increase in the average workweek, suggesting a robust economic performance during the month.

Wood pointed out that while many analysts may anticipate rising inflation and further tightening from the Federal Reserve, she perceives a shift towards stronger real growth and technology-driven deflation. Current overall inflation stands at 3.7%, with alternative measures closer to 2%.

She noted that oil prices could potentially fall to $30, and stock markets are reaching all-time highs amid rising interest rates. Furthermore, capital expenditures have surpassed levels not seen in over two decades, with companies adopting artificial intelligence creating jobs at an accelerated pace. Wood believes these trends indicate the emergence of a new economy, contrasting with the consensus that is still focused on traditional economic models.
