Coinbase Aims to Become 'Everything Exchange' with New Tokenization Model
Coinbase, a leading cryptocurrency exchange based in the United States, is pursuing an ambitious goal to transform into the world's first 'everything exchange.' John D'Agostino, head of strategy at Coinbase Institutional, discussed this vision during a recent interview, emphasizing the importance of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) innovation exemption in facilitating this transition.
The innovation exemption allows certain forms of tokenized stocks to trade in the U.S., which D'Agostino believes is crucial for the growth of the industry. He noted that Coinbase is actively developing its tokenization model, which was recently launched in Abu Dhabi, with plans to extend access to U.S. investors. This model aims to provide token holders with traditional rights backed by actual equity, marking a significant step towards integrating traditional finance with blockchain technology.
In addition to tokenization, Coinbase has announced that retail customers in the U.S. will soon be able to participate in initial public offerings (IPOs). D'Agostino stated that Coinbase is committed to offering a wide range of services in one centralized location, leveraging blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies while recognizing the gradual shift from legacy financial systems to modern solutions.
