Cuomo Fires at Crypto’s Lopsided Political Gamble

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo told the crypto industry to stop betting almost exclusively on Republicans. He warned that the strategy is poisoning its relationship with Democrats whose votes are essential to passing federal crypto legislation. Cuomo made the remarks at a Token2049 panel alongside OKX Chief Executive Officer Star Xu on 7 October.

Crypto PAC Spending Tilts Heavily Toward the GOP

Crypto-focused political action committees tracked by Tech Influence Watch have spent $54.3 million supporting Republican candidates in the 2026 election cycle, compared with $26.2 million backing Democrats. An additional $23.2 million has gone toward opposing Democratic candidates, according to the tracker's latest figures. That two-to-one spending gap is the backdrop for Cuomo's criticism, and the imbalance matters because passing the CLARITY Act requires bipartisan support. In July 2025, 78 House Democrats joined 216 Republicans to pass the bill, while 134 Democrats voted against it.  All Senate Democrats and four Republicans blocked a procedural vote on the CLARITY Act in September. Many cited potential conflicts of interest involving President Donald Trump's crypto businesses, Cointelegraph reported. Seven Democratic senators later issued a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to passing the legislation.

Cuomo Calls for Balanced Political Investment

Cuomo argued that pouring money into one party guarantees hostility from the other, a dynamic that could stall crypto regulation indefinitely. A Kalshi prediction market placed the probability of Democrats winning both chambers of Congress in November at roughly 61% as of 7 October, raising the stakes for an industry that has burned bridges with the likely majority."When you invest heavily in the Republican Party, by definition, you're going to alienate Democrats," Cuomo told the Token2049 audience. "You need Democrats to pass the bill. You need Republicans. You have to be more balanced." Cuomo added that crypto technology aligns naturally with Democratic priorities around financial inclusion, noting that the party has worked throughout its history to expand access to financial products for underserved communities.

Fairshake's Latest Endorsements Signal a Shift

Crypto PAC Fairshake announced on 6 October that it would support 32 House candidates in the November midterm elections, splitting its backing between 19 Republicans and 13 Democrats. The move suggests at least some industry players recognize the risk Cuomo described, though the ratio still favors Republicans. Whether that partial correction comes fast enough to soften Democratic opposition before a potential January majority remains an open question the industry has not answered. Cuomo's warning arrives as the GENIUS Act stablecoin framework, which drew 18 Democratic Senate votes in June 2025, remains one of the few pieces of crypto legislation with genuine bipartisan traction. The CLARITY Act could face another Senate procedural vote before the end of the lame-duck session. Whether crypto PACs shift their spending in the final weeks before the November midterms will signal how seriously the industry takes Cuomo's bipartisan prescription.
