Manhattan Jury Convicts Hacker for Uranium Finance DeFi Exploits

A federal jury in Manhattan has found Jonathan Spalletta guilty of computer fraud and money laundering related to two significant attacks on Uranium Finance, a decentralized finance exchange that collapsed in April 2021. The jury reached its verdict on October 7, 2026, after a six-day trial that examined the intricacies of smart contracts and liquidity pools.

Spalletta executed the first exploit on April 8, 2021, draining approximately $1.4 million by manipulating a smart-contract function. A second, more damaging attack occurred on April 28, 2021, resulting in the theft of around $53.3 million from 26 liquidity pools, leading to the exchange's closure. Following the attacks, Spalletta laundered a significant portion of the stolen funds, with about $26 million funneled through Tornado Cash, a crypto mixing service.

In addition to laundering the stolen cryptocurrency, Spalletta purchased high-value collectibles, including a rare Magic: The Gathering card and a Roman coin commemorating Julius Caesar's assassination. Law enforcement seized around $31 million in cryptocurrency linked to the theft in February 2025, along with collectibles valued at over $3 million from his residence. Spalletta now faces a potential sentence of up to 30 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for February 16, 2027.
