Samsung’s Record 107 Trillion Won Quarter Jolts Micron

Samsung Electronics guided a record operating profit of approximately 107.4 trillion won for the third quarter of 2026. This marks the first quarterly operating profit above 100 trillion won in Samsung's history, up from 89.4 trillion won in the second quarter. Revenue reached approximately 195 trillion won. The preliminary release, issued on 8 October, contained no divisional breakdown; full results with the segment split are due later this month.

How Samsung's Number Compares With Consensus

Pre-release FnGuide consensus put Samsung's third-quarter operating profit at 108.13 trillion won and revenue at 201.73 trillion won. The guided figures of 107.4 trillion won and 195 trillion won came in slightly below those estimates.Analysts at IBK Securities had forecast 101.7 trillion won, while Hana Securities projected 108 trillion won, according to research notes published in early October. The miss against the top-end consensus reflects short-term won strength, which multiple brokerages flagged as a headwind, and unpaid second-quarter performance bonuses that Samsung partly booked in the third quarter.Samsung's operating profit surged approximately 788% year-over-year from the third quarter of 2025, when the company earned 12.1 trillion won on revenue of 86 trillion won. The sequential climb from second-quarter operating profit of 89.4 trillion won, a 20% jump, confirms that the memory supercycle is still accelerating even as the pace of quarter-on-quarter gains narrows.

What Samsung's Print Signals for Micron

Memory makers report in a predictable sequence, and Samsung goes first. Micron Technology delivered its own record fiscal fourth quarter on 30 September, posting $54.23 billion in revenue and $43.75 billion in GAAP operating income, translating to an 80.7% operating margin, Micron disclosed in its earnings release. For the full fiscal year ended 3 September, Micron generated $133.19 billion in revenue, a 256% increase over fiscal 2025. Samsung's result reinforces the pricing environment Micron described: DRAM prices rose an estimated 15% and NAND prices climbed 18% quarter-over-quarter, according to Hana Securities estimates. Samsung's quarter covers almost the same months as the Micron fiscal fourth quarter just reported, and its tone is the first read on whether Micron's fiscal first quarter can hit the $61.5 billion guide. Samsung's guided number also provides a read on whether demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI servers and enterprise solid-state drives has softened.Micron guided fiscal first-quarter revenue of $61.5 billion, plus or minus $1.5 billion, which would represent another sequential record.

What Carries Over and What Does Not

Samsung's preliminary release is a top-line figure with no segment detail. The division breakdown, expected later in October, will reveal how much of the profit came from memory versus mobile, display, and consumer electronics. Samsung's non-memory divisions have been dragging on consolidated margins. Samsung's non-memory businesses have also faced pressure, while Micron has no comparable drag because its business is concentrated in memory and storage. A strong Samsung memory number, therefore, translates more directly to Micron than the consolidated headline does.SK Hynix, the third major memory producer, is scheduled to report later this month. A trifecta of strong memory earnings from all three suppliers would confirm the supercycle thesis and likely support Micron's valuation into its next quarterly print.Samsung's upward profit trajectory is expected to continue into the fourth quarter, according to analyst forecasts published ahead of the preliminary results. Micron shares will reflect the Samsung readthrough when US premarket trading opens.Samsung's full third-quarter results with the division-by-division breakdown are due later in October. SK Hynix reports shortly after. Micron's fiscal first-quarter 2027 earnings, expected in late December, will be the next direct data point on whether HBM and enterprise SSD demand sustained their trajectory through the autumn.
