Douyin Surpasses WeChat as Most Used App in China
In a significant shift in the Chinese digital landscape, Douyin has overtaken WeChat to become the most used app in terms of average monthly usage duration per user. This milestone was highlighted in Nomura's latest monthly research report on China's internet and new media, which revealed that in July 2026, Douyin's average monthly usage time surpassed that of WeChat for the first time.
The report indicates that this change reflects evolving user preferences and the growing popularity of short video content, which Douyin specializes in. WeChat, while still a dominant platform for messaging and social networking, has seen a decline in user engagement compared to Douyin, which has rapidly gained traction among younger demographics in China.
