Goldman Sachs Predicts $1.4 Trillion in AI Capital Expenditures by 2027

Goldman Sachs Research announced on September 18 that artificial intelligence (AI) is moving from the experimental phase to implementation, highlighted by the emergence of consumer-grade AI agents. This shift was discussed at the Communacopia + Technology Conference in San Francisco, where companies presented their transition from experimentation to practical applications. The firm anticipates that capital expenditures for major U.S. companies will reach $1.4 trillion by 2027, surpassing Wall Street's expectations.

Eric Sheridan, an analyst at Goldman Sachs, noted that consumer-grade AI agents are evolving from simple conversational tools to capable of performing complex tasks, such as booking hotels and purchasing tickets. The potential for monetization in the mass market is expected to mirror the success of search engines, relying on advertising and subscription models. As AI technology progresses, the focus is shifting from infrastructure to platform and application layers, driven by decreasing costs and increasing utility.

While concerns regarding AI risks were prevalent during the conference, Goldman Sachs believes that these issues will not hinder ongoing infrastructure development. Demand for computing power continues to outstrip supply, and many projects are already contracted. However, challenges such as supply chain constraints related to memory chips, electricity, and land could present obstacles. Despite these factors, the firm projects that the capital expenditure cycle will remain robust through 2027.
