Xi Jinping to Visit Washington Amidst Trade Discussions
Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to visit Washington, D.C. this week for a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. This visit marks Xi's first trip to the United States in 11 years. Reports indicate that Xi is unlikely to bring a delegation of corporate executives, which may temper expectations for substantial business agreements during the summit.
The discussions are anticipated to focus on maintaining the current trade situation between the two nations. Both parties may explore extending the existing tariff truce, reducing tariffs on select non-sensitive goods, and making incremental progress on trade committees and tariff reductions. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer mentioned that a limited number of goods are being considered for potential trade agreements.
President Trump will personally welcome Xi at Andrews Joint Base, where a state ceremony will take place on Thursday, featuring 479 military personnel. The summit is expected to cover various topics, including artificial intelligence and rare earth materials.
