Bitstamp Drives Most of Robinhood’s $17.5 Billion August…
Why Did Robinhood's Crypto Volume Rebound in August?
Robinhood's crypto trading volume rose sharply in August, with combined activity across its consumer app and Bitstamp reaching $17.5 billion, up 61% from July. The rebound shows a clear improvement in month-to-month trading activity, although volumes remain well below last year's levels. Total crypto volume was still 38% lower than in August 2025, leaving Robinhood with stronger short-term momentum but a weaker year-on-year comparison.Bitstamp accounted for the majority of August activity, generating $10.1 billion in volume. That represented a 53% increase from July but remained 30% below the year-earlier level. The Robinhood app recorded $7.4 billion in crypto volume, up 72% month-on-month. Its year-on-year decline was steeper, however, with activity down 46% from August 2025.The figures show that both parts of Robinhood's crypto business benefited from stronger trading conditions in August, while Bitstamp continued to contribute the larger share of overall volume. How Important Has Bitstamp Become to Robinhood?
Bitstamp has quickly become a major component of Robinhood's crypto operation following its acquisition in June 2025.The exchange was already the larger contributor to Robinhood's crypto trading activity during the second quarter. Bitstamp generated $22 billion of the company's $40 billion total crypto volume for the period, compared with $18 billion through the Robinhood app.August continued that pattern, with Bitstamp accounting for about 58% of combined crypto volume. The exchange's contribution gives Robinhood a larger institutional and international crypto trading footprint than it had when its digital asset business was concentrated primarily inside the retail brokerage app. That diversification also matters because trading patterns across Bitstamp and Robinhood's consumer platform are not identical. Bitstamp's smaller year-on-year decline in August suggests it provided some stability as activity on the Robinhood app remained further below last year's levels.Investor Takeaway
Robinhood's August crypto numbers point to improving short-term trading activity, but the year-on-year declines show that volumes have not returned to 2025 levels. Bitstamp is increasingly important because it now contributes more than half of Robinhood's crypto turnover.
Why Has Higher Volume Not Solved the Revenue Problem?
Trading volume is only part of the picture for Robinhood's crypto business. The company reported $100 million in crypto transaction revenue during the second quarter, down 38% from approximately $160 million a year earlier. That decline occurred even as Bitstamp added substantial trading volume to the group, showing that higher consolidated turnover does not automatically translate into comparable transaction revenue growth. The difference can reflect the mix of customers, products and fee structures across the business. Bitstamp's large contribution to aggregate volume makes Robinhood's crypto operation considerably bigger in trading terms, but the economics of that activity differ from retail transactions executed through the Robinhood app.For investors, that makes revenue conversion an important measure alongside headline trading volumes. August's 61% monthly increase is constructive for activity, but future earnings reports will show whether stronger trading translates into improved crypto transaction revenue. What Does the August Report Mean for Robinhood's Broader Business?
Crypto remains an important part of Robinhood, but the company's second-quarter results also showed that its earnings are becoming less dependent on digital asset trading alone. The 38% year-on-year decline in crypto transaction revenue was more than offset by growth in event contracts, options and equities, helping Robinhood deliver record quarterly revenue and earnings. That gives the company more room to absorb periods of weaker crypto activity while retaining exposure to upside when digital asset trading accelerates.August therefore presents a mixed but improving picture. Crypto activity recovered strongly from July across both Bitstamp and the Robinhood app, while Bitstamp maintained its role as the larger source of volume. At the same time, the substantial year-on-year declines show that the business is still operating below the trading intensity seen a year earlier. The reported figures also exclude volume from the Robinhood Chain, meaning the monthly operating data does not capture every part of the company's expanding digital asset infrastructure.Source: FinanceFeeds
