Cybersecurity Consultant Convicted for $55 Million Crypto Theft from Uranium Finance

A federal jury in Manhattan has found Jonathan Spalletta, a cybersecurity consultant from Maryland, guilty of computer fraud and money laundering related to the theft of nearly $55 million in cryptocurrency from Uranium Finance, a decentralized exchange that ceased operations following the attacks. The jury reached its verdict on October 7, 2026, after deliberating for approximately two hours.

Spalletta was linked to two significant exploits on Uranium Finance in April 2021. The first incident on April 8 resulted in the theft of around $1.4 million, while a more severe attack on April 28 drained approximately $53.3 million from the platform. Following these events, Uranium Finance shut down, prompting a federal investigation into the stolen funds.

Prosecutors revealed that Spalletta laundered a substantial portion of the stolen cryptocurrency, routing about $26 million through Tornado Cash, a crypto mixer, between 2021 and 2023. He allegedly used the funds to purchase high-value collectibles, including a Black Lotus Magic: The Gathering card worth around $500,000 and first-edition Pokémon sets valued at over $1 million. Authorities seized approximately $31 million in crypto from Spalletta in February 2025, highlighting the effectiveness of blockchain forensics in tracing illicit transactions.

Spalletta was charged in March 2026 and pleaded not guilty. His trial commenced on September 28, 2026, concluding with the conviction. Sentencing is scheduled for February 16, 2027, where he faces a potential maximum of 30 years in prison for both counts, with up to 10 years for fraud and 20 for money laundering. This case underscores the challenges and implications of security in the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector.
