Ethereum Researcher Calls for Crypto Industry to Prepare for AI Threats

Justin Drake, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, has urged the cryptocurrency sector to adopt a 'bunker mode' in response to potential threats posed by advancements in artificial intelligence. On October 7, 2026, Drake warned that AI could potentially compromise the security of ECDSA signatures, a cryptographic method used by major blockchains like Bitcoin and Ethereum, in a matter of months rather than years.

Drake's concerns stem from recent demonstrations of AI's mathematical capabilities, which he believes could lead to a rapid breakdown of ECDSA security. He emphasized the need for large holders of cryptocurrency to transfer their assets to new addresses that keep their public keys hidden, thereby reducing the risk of exposure to potential attacks. He specifically called on major exchanges and custodians, including Binance and Bitfinex, to take the lead in implementing these precautionary measures.

While Drake's proposal is framed as a precautionary measure rather than an immediate crisis, it highlights the urgency for the crypto community to reassess its security protocols. The market response to his warning has been muted, with little visible concern from traders and exchanges. Nonetheless, Drake's suggestions could prompt a reevaluation of how cryptocurrencies are secured in light of evolving technological threats.
