Matter Labs Open-Sources Prividium Core Code for Enterprise Blockchain

Matter Labs has released the core permissioning engine of its enterprise blockchain platform, Prividium, under the Apache 2.0 license. This move, which took place on September 8, 2026, allows institutions to independently build permissioned chains using publicly shared code. The release is significant as it addresses concerns from large organizations about vendor lock-in, enabling them to verify and modify the permissioning logic without needing to rely on Matter Labs.

Germany's Deutsche Bundesbank is the first institution to test a self-hosted instance of Prividium, collaborating with Matter Labs on both design and testing. The permissioning engine is crucial for regulated institutions, as it determines access and auditability on private chains, which are key compliance factors. While the core engine is now open-source, Matter Labs retains proprietary control over certain enterprise tools, including user interfaces and deployment resources.

The open-sourcing of the permissioning engine completes a broader stack that includes previously released components such as ZKsync OS and interoperability contracts. This initiative is framed as a response to institutional feedback, aiming to alleviate concerns about dependency on a single vendor for critical technology. The Bundesbank's involvement serves as a credibility marker for ZKsync's ambitions in the enterprise blockchain space, although it remains in the testing phase rather than a full production rollout.
