This criticism is part of a broader strategy to counter Amodei's warnings about AI safety, particularly as the company prepares for a potentially record-breaking initial public offering. Sources indicate that during the upcoming midterm elections, these allies may use Amodei's political stance and concerns about AI to undermine his credibility.
A memo circulating within the White House, reportedly obtained by Axios, attempts to depict effective altruism—a movement associated with Amodei—as a fringe group disconnected from mainstream American values. Written by a political advisor not currently affiliated with the White House, the memo claims that effective altruism has created a 'doomsday pipeline' for artificial intelligence, positioning Amodei at the forefront of this narrative. The document also references his sister, Daniela Amodei, who serves as president of Anthropic, labeling their connections as 'Anthropic nodes.'
A source close to the government has suggested that Amodei's ideology and approach to innovation conflict with the 'America First' agenda championed by Trump. In response to these attacks, Anthropic has sought to distance itself from the effective altruism movement. Daniela Amodei has publicly stated her disagreement with the label, while Dario Amodei has emphasized in interviews that he does not identify as a member of the movement and has advocated for the positive potential of artificial intelligence.
