WeWork Shares Drop Over 10% Following Unverified Fundraising Claims

WeWork's shares fell by more than 10% amid unverified reports of a $5 billion fundraising effort. This decline reflects a recurring trend in the company's tumultuous financial journey, characterized by significant capital raises that have often failed to stabilize its market position.

The coworking company has a history of large capital injections that have not yielded lasting success. In January 2019, SoftBank invested approximately $6 billion at a valuation of $47 billion, but this was followed by a failed IPO attempt and a subsequent $5 billion rescue package from SoftBank in October 2019 to prevent the company's collapse.

WeWork went public in 2021 through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), achieving an enterprise value of around $9 billion. However, the company filed for bankruptcy two years later, and the restructured entity is now primarily controlled by Yardi Systems, which owns about 60% of the company. In contrast, WeWork India, a separate entity, completed a $338 million IPO in October 2025 but faced a tepid market response on its debut.
