Binance Founder CZ Engages with Vitalik Buterin on AI's Impact on Cryptographic Security
On October 9, Changpeng Zhao, commonly known as CZ, the founder of Binance, engaged in a discussion on social media platform X regarding the implications of artificial intelligence on cryptographic security. His comments were in response to a detailed article by Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, who expressed concerns about AI's potential to accelerate mathematical research in ways that could undermine existing cryptographic systems.
In his post, CZ humorously rated Buterin's mathematical prowess at 99.99 points, while he rated himself at 0.01 points, suggesting that their combined efforts could lead to significant insights. He acknowledged that while many might struggle to fully grasp Buterin's complex analyses, he believes such discussions are valuable and worth exploring.
Buterin had previously warned that advancements in AI could weaken the security of lattice-based cryptography within the next two years, particularly affecting technologies like ML-DSA and fully homomorphic encryption. He indicated that the rapid progress in mathematical research driven by AI could mirror the advancements typically seen over the past five decades, prompting Ethereum's development team to shift towards pure hash signature schemes to reduce reliance on lattice cryptography.
