Bank of England's Greene Advocates for Proactive Inflation Measures

Megan Greene, a member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), has emphasized the need for a proactive approach to inflation management in the UK. She warned that waiting for second-round inflation effects to manifest could result in the central bank reacting too late. Greene, who has voted for interest rate hikes in recent MPC meetings, believes that the current monetary policy is not sufficiently restrictive to combat rising inflation pressures.

Greene's comments come amid concerns over the impact of elevated energy prices, particularly due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has led to increased oil and diesel costs. She highlighted that if these costs begin to influence wages and broader pricing strategies, it could make inflation more persistent, necessitating a stronger response from the Bank. Greene's hawkish stance aligns with market expectations for a potential interest rate increase at the Bank's upcoming meeting in November, which is currently priced in at approximately 84%.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently raised its growth forecast for the UK to 1.3% for 2026, citing stronger investments related to artificial intelligence. However, it also warned of significant risks stemming from the geopolitical situation and high energy prices. Greene's perspective suggests that the MPC must act decisively to prevent inflation from becoming entrenched, as failing to do so could lead to more severe tightening measures in the future. Upcoming wage and inflation data will be crucial in determining the committee's direction.
