Morgan Stanley Initiates Coverage of Coinbase with Cautious Outlook
Morgan Stanley has begun coverage of Coinbase, a prominent cryptocurrency platform, with an Equal Weight rating and a price target of $250. This target suggests a potential upside of over 40% from current trading levels. Analyst Michael Cyprys expressed that while the company has expanded its offerings beyond its initial focus on Bitcoin, it remains closely linked to the fluctuations of the cryptocurrency market.
Coinbase has transformed into a comprehensive platform that includes retail and institutional trading, custody services, stablecoins, derivatives, staking, and payment solutions. As of the end of the second quarter, the platform reported 7.6 million monthly transacting users and $246 billion in assets. Despite this growth, Cyprys highlighted that retail crypto trading, which constitutes approximately 40% of Coinbase's revenue, continues to be a significant factor influencing the company's performance.
Looking ahead, Cyprys anticipates a cyclical reset in 2026, followed by a strong recovery in 2027 and a return to normalization in 2028, predicting an adjusted EBITDA of around $3 billion. His price target is derived from a multiple of 21 times this estimate, aligning with Coinbase's historical averages and the median of its digital asset peers. While he acknowledges the company's diversification efforts, he cautions that these do not eliminate the inherent volatility of the crypto cycle.
