Public WiFi Not to Blame for Cryptocurrency Theft, Experts Say

The Chief Information Security Officer of Slow Fog, known as 23pds, clarified that public WiFi itself does not directly steal cryptocurrency. Instead, losses typically arise from phishing pages accessed through fake WiFi networks and the actions of users who may inadvertently sign transactions or import private keys. The specific websites visited and the operations performed after connecting to public networks are critical factors in determining whether asset losses occur.

This statement follows an incident reported by a user named Xiaoyu_184CM, who claimed that after connecting to free WiFi at Singapore Airport, 3.7 BNB was transferred from a previously unused wallet. Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, commonly referred to as CZ, reiterated his long-standing advice against using public WiFi, emphasizing that merely connecting does not result in wallet theft without additional actions.

Crypto influencer AB KuaiDong suggested that the incident could involve someone deliberately setting up a rogue free WiFi network or tampering with the router. Xiaoyu expressed agreement with this theory, indicating a belief that malicious intent may have played a role in the theft.
