Starknet considers transitioning to an L1 network to counter quantum threats, targeting 2027

PANews, October 9 — StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson published a post exploring the necessity of upgrading Starknet to an L1 to address post-quantum era threats. He noted that the quantum computing threat may be closer than expected, and combined with the rapid development of AI, existing security assumptions may be broken, so blockchains need to enter "shelter mode" and quickly achieve future-proofing. Key elements include: adopting appropriate cryptographic technology, having cryptographic agility, and becoming an independent L1. As an L2, Starknet relies on Ethereum's security. Ethereum aims to achieve full quantum resistance by the end of 2029, Bitcoin has no commitment yet, while Starknet, if upgraded to an L1, could be the first to achieve it in 2027. This move would allow it to autonomously control its security migration and become a quantum-resistant network capable of public or private transactions and asset holding.
