Bitcoin Drops Below $83,000, Liquidating Nearly $42 Million in Long Positions
Bitcoin experienced a significant drop below $83,000 on October 8, 2026, resulting in the liquidation of nearly $42 million in long positions before the opening of US stock markets. This decline was part of a larger trend, with approximately $696 million in positions liquidated across a 24-hour period, primarily affecting bullish traders who had leveraged their bets on rising prices.
The price dip saw intraday lows ranging from $82,880 to $83,500, depending on the trading venue. However, Bitcoin quickly rebounded to around $83,100 shortly after the initial drop, indicating that the decline was brief. Analysts described this event as a leverage flush, rather than a reaction to significant news, as trading volumes remained relatively low and no major changes in market fundamentals were identified.
The backdrop for this volatility included rising oil prices due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and ongoing outflows from Bitcoin exchange-traded funds. These factors contributed to a general sense of anxiety among risk assets. Additionally, open interest in Bitcoin derivatives had been increasing, suggesting a buildup of positions that could lead to further volatility.
The $83,000 to $84,000 price range has been a critical inflection point for Bitcoin throughout 2026, often triggering liquidation cascades when breached. While the recent drop did not lead to sustained selling pressure, it highlighted the risks associated with leveraged trading, particularly in a market characterized by crowded positions and elevated open interest.
